Why Mangroves Matter

Mangroves are among the most productive ecosystems on Earth.

In Watamu, mangroves have sustained fishing communities for generations.

Prawns Lake is reversing that trend one seedling at a time.

What We Do

Our Conservation Programs

Mangrove Restoration

We propagate and plant native mangrove species including Rhizophora mucronata, Avicennia marina, and Ceriops tagal.

50,000+

Seedlings planted

Creek Cleanups

Monthly community cleanups remove plastic waste, fishing debris, and pollutants from the creek and mangrove channels.

120+

Cleanups completed

Community Nursery

Local women and youth raise seedlings, monitor growth rates, and conduct experiments on propagation techniques.

25,000+

Biodiversity Protection

We monitor fish populations, prawns diversity, bird sightings, and invertebrate communities.

Nature-Based Solutions

Mangrove restoration buffers storm surges, prevents coastal erosion, and sequesters carbon.

200+

Tons CO2 sequestered

Patrol & Monitoring

Community rangers patrol the creek to prevent illegal cutting and monitor ecosystem health.

How It Works

From Seedling to Forest

01

Collect Propagules

We collect healthy propagules from surviving mother trees during the natural fruiting season.

02

Nurture in Nursery

Propagules are raised in our community nursery for 3–6 months with daily care.

03

Site Preparation

Degraded sites are assessed for tidal flow, sediment quality, and accessibility.

04

Plant & Monitor

Community teams plant seedlings and monitor survival, growth, and biodiversity return.

Science & Data

Research & Monitoring

Prawns Lake is not just a restoration site it is a living research station. We partner with universities and research institutions to study mangrove ecology, carbon sequestration, fisheries recovery, and community-based conservation effectiveness.

Our monitoring program tracks seedling survival rates, tree growth, soil carbon, water quality, fish abundance, crab diversity, and bird populations. All data is shared openly with partners and contributes to national and global conservation databases.

Researchers and students are welcome to conduct fieldwork, long-term studies, and thesis projects at Prawns Lake. We provide local logistics, community introductions, and access to long-term datasets.
