A living classroom where knowledge meets nature and conservation

Prawns Lake is a living laboratory. Here, students do not just read about mangroves in textbooks — they plant seedlings, measure growth rates, test water quality, identify species, and listen to the community members who have protected this ecosystem for generations.
We believe the most powerful education happens at the intersection of science, culture, and action. Our programs are designed to inspire curiosity, build practical skills, and foster a lifelong commitment to environmental stewardship.
Whether you are a primary school teacher planning a field trip, a PhD candidate seeking a field station, or a conservation practitioner looking for hands-on training, Prawns Lake offers a unique and immersive learning environment.

Bring your students to a living classroom where ecology, biology, and environmental science come alive. Our curriculum-aligned programs include guided mangrove walks, seedling planting, water quality testing, biodiversity surveys, and interactive lessons on climate change and the blue economy.
Prawns Lake serves as a field station for marine biology, ecology, environmental science, and conservation management students. We provide accommodation, logistics, local expertise, access to long-term datasets, and community introductions for research projects and thesis work.

Independent researchers and scientists are welcome to base their fieldwork at Prawns Lake. We offer accommodation, boat access, equipment storage, lab space, and collaboration with our community monitoring team. Priority areas include mangrove ecology, fisheries, carbon sequestration, and community-based conservation.
We host workshops on mangrove restoration techniques, community-based conservation, eco-tourism development, and climate adaptation. Our team has deep practical experience and is eager to share lessons learned with practitioners, policymakers, and development partners.

We actively support and seek research collaboration in these focus areas. Our datasets, field access, and community partnerships are open to qualified researchers.
Study species composition, growth rates, survival factors, and ecosystem recovery trajectories across our restoration plots.
Monitor fish abundance, crab diversity, mollusk populations, and invertebrate communities in natural and restored mangrove habitats.
Measure above-ground and below-ground carbon stocks, sediment accumulation rates, and the climate mitigation potential of restored mangroves.
Evaluate the social, economic, and governance dimensions of community-led conservation. Document best practices and lessons learned.
Assess the impact of eco-tourism on local economies, employment, gender equity, and conservation attitudes.
Study the role of mangroves in coastal protection, storm surge buffering, and climate adaptation for vulnerable communities.
Prawns Lake offers practical, comfortable facilities for researchers, students, and workshop participants. We understand what fieldwork requires — and we have built our infrastructure to support it.

We are proud to collaborate with leading institutions in Kenya and beyond. We are always open to new partnerships.
